An attacker has to close the distance in order to launch an assault on you. Learning the proper way to maintain space involves efficient movement strategies and being aware of your surroundings. Always keep the assailant at arm's length and maintain a solid stance with feet shoulder width apart to enable quick mobility. Prevent yourself from being put into a tight spot and never let an attacker get to your back. You need space in order to escape.

Knowing how to break various grips are essential self defense techniques to preventing an aggressor from controlling and taking you to the ground. The wrist grab, headlock, and bear hug are three common ways an attacker will try to hold you.

Breaking the wrist grip entails circling your own wrist towards the thumb or a palm strike on the wrist of the attackers gripping hand. Don't make it a test of strength by trying to yank your arm away. As stated before, you have the option to strike in order to make them release the grip.

The procedure to escape a headlock is to defend first and then break free of the hold. The aggressor can use the headlock to set up a strike (punch to the head) or they can choke you if it is secured around the neck. You can hit a crucial point of the body or push the elbow of the arm wrapping the head to free yourself from the lock.

Escaping a bear hug requires you to lower your base by bending your knees and pushing on the attackers wrist to break free. If the attacker bear hugs over your arms, you'll need to change your level and turn your hips to the side to create space to escape or trip the attacker to the ground.

The strikes you use should do the maximum amount of damage to the assailant while preventing injury to yourself. The palm strike and hammer fist are two highly effective types of strikes that will prevent injury to your hand when performed.

Push kicks (Teep) are the best types of kicks to perform for self defense while at the same time keeping an attacker at a safe distance. You should kick the kneecaps or groin area to hinder mobility and cause the maximum amount of damage.

Your personal safety comes down to using common sense, preventive strategies, and effective self defense techniques. At no point in a violent situation should the roles change and victim become the aggressor. Incorporate some type of self defense Martial arts training to provide the necessary skills to react instinctively in a violent situation.
